Donald Beachler was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1956. Beachler has studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland (1974-77); Cooper Union in New York, New York (1977-78); and the Staatliche Hochschule fuer Bildende Kuenste, Staedelschule in Frankfurt am Main, Germany (1978-79). Beachler emerged as a member of New York City’s East Village art scene in the 1980s and is often associated with other East Village artists, including Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf. Baechler sees himself as an abstract artist whose concerns are primarily formal, rooted in line, shape, color, and composition. The artist mentions Cy Twombly and Giotto as his primary influences. Baechler had a recent solo exhibition at Cheim & Read in New York, New York (2019); and many notable exhibitions, a couple include, The Kunsthalle Merano, Italy (2005); and The Museum der Moderne, Rupertinum, Salzburg, Austria (2004). Baechler’s work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and The Centre George Pompidou, Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris among other institutions worldwide.
